The night sky is alive with many wonders, distant plants, vast star clusters. glowing nebulae and expansive galaxies all waiting to be explored.
So bring your telescope and charts. The first stop- Earths nearest neighbour in space is the Moon and the rest of the universe is waiting for you.
Just beyond Byland Abbey is Mount Snever Observatory-which can be access from Wass village by a bridle path up through the woods. This stone tower was built by John Wormald of Oldstead Hall in 1837 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Coronation and contained a large telescope. Although it is now disused the view it commands on a clear day reaches from Staxton Wold near Filey in the east to the fells of Cumbria in the west.
